"Proud to announce on this historic day that my partner of 20 years, Barry Rice, and I are engaged to be married," the Food Network personality and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" alum tweeted hours after the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was ruled invalid.
Allen, 48, and Rice are New York residents, where marriage equality was passed on the state level in 2011. The new ruling now makes homosexual partners eligible for the same legal benefits given to heterosexual couples under federal law, including things like health insurance, Social Security, and pension protection.
Allen received many well wishes following his Twitter engagement announcement, which got 887 favorites and 446 retweets.
Fellow foodies Mario Batali and Duff Goldman were among those sending congratulations.
Earlier in the day, Etheridge announced that she will be marrying her partner of three years, TV writer Linda Wallem. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, who previously said that they wouldn't marry until it was legal in California, also announced their plans to wed as the Supreme Court's second ruling dismissed California's same-sex marriage ban, Prop 8. However, neither of those weddings will take place immediately.
There is a waiting period of at least 25 days, during which requests to reconsider the case can be heard.
